Yesterday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel was at war with Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organisation from Gaza, which has fired over 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory since Friday, infiltrating the world’s only Jewish State from land, sea and air, slaughtering over 700 civilians, injuring 2,156 people and reportedly taking over 100 innocent civilians, women and children hostage. Footage of Israeli citizens being massacred in their homes, streets and neighbourhoods is being circulated by Palestinian terrorists following this unprovoked attack on the Jewish State. Rockets have exploded in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Sderot and Ashkelon. Several population centres remain under Hamas attack. National Spokesperson of the South African Zionist Federation, Rolene Marks, is currently in Modiin, Israel and bearing witness to the horrifying acts of terror taking place on the ground: “Elderly people have been executed in the street, civilians including young children have been abducted and taken captive by the internationally-designated terrorist organisation. The world is watching and the world is disgusted. The United Nations has joined 29 countries, including the Ukraine, in condemning this violence – it is unconscionable that the South African government hasn’t done the same” she shares. Hamas’ wide-scale operation took place on the Shabbat which also marked the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah. This unprecedented attack, deliberately executed during a Jewish holiday and Shabbat, shows the world once again that Hamas’ modus operandi is to murder innocent Jews, stoke fear, and attempt to destroy the world’s only Jewish state. Perhaps now the world will see what happens when Israeli forces are unable to preempt and prevent Palestinian terrorist attacks. A number of towns have been hit by rockets and innocent people are being slaughtered in their homes and neighbourhoods. Each attack is a war crime and gross violation of human rights, and must be universally condemned. The SAZF calls on the ANC government to unequivocally condemn the violence of Hamas militants and Palestinian terrorists responsible for the massacre taking place at present. The SAZF also calls on the University of Cape Town to immediately condemn the UCT Palestine Solidarity Forum for abhorrently shocking social media posts indicating their support of this violence, with Instagram stories saying “the time has come”, and other South African civil society groups who have issued hateful statements. Israel has a right and obligation to defend herself and her civilians against Palestinian terror. The IDF have launched operation “Swords of Iron” in response.
